Khoo Kongsi

The Boon San Tong Khoo Kongsi or better known as Khoo Kongsi is the ancestral temple of the Khoo subclan known as the Hai Kee Kak, or "Sea Edge Pillar". It is one of the most magnificent temples in Penang. It was built in 1906 by the descendents of Khoo Kong Oon, a fifth generation of the Leong San Tong Khoo clan. One of the most influential member of the clan who was instrumental in making Khoo Kongsi the most powerful component of the association is Khoo Thean Teik.

The ancestral tablets of the Hai Kee Kak are found inside the Khoo Kongsi. The original entrance to Boon San Tong Khoo Kongsi was through a narrow passageway from Beach Street. In 1907, the entrance to the temple was changed to face Victoria Street. There are beautiful carvings of statues all around the temple. The carvings were done by master craftsmen.
